Typical Family

When Jess was pregnant with Miah a couple folks, mainly from Pennsylvania, congratulated us on our "Million Dollar Family." I never heard the term before but I was willing to accept the check in the mail! The term is used when a family has two kids, the older son and younger daughter. I guess it is the typical family one might think of - probably from sitcoms or something. These are my only kids, so I really do not know any different! As Miah grows up with her big brother Hugh, she really will not know any different either. Life as she knows it will always have an older brother.

Hugh's most favorite stuffed animal is a gray cat, named Cat. In the stuffed animal kingdom of our home, Hugh has started associating himself with Cat. In some ways, Cat is Hugh. Naturally Cat has a father and mother - the father is represented by Tiger (which I kinda like) and the mother is represented by Pig (which was just coincidence). Duck is Cat's little sister and the stuffed dog is, of course, Melvin the Foxhound. Cat's family resembles the only family Hugh knows; the typical family he thinks of. (Except for Cat's friend, Kangaroo - I have no idea who that is).

The family I have now is not the family I grew up with, and there are certainly lots of different families out there. But they are the family I love and the family that I think of as normal for me. Worth a million bucks for sure . . . though that check must have gotten lost in the mail.
