A few days ago I was brushing my teeth after getting Hugh dressed in the morning. Hugh crawled into the bathroom, big smile on his face, dragging his pajamas along with the intent of throwing them in the toilet. As he stood next to the toilet’s rim and raised his PJs in the same way I have witnessed many a ball and stuffed animal plummet to the ground, I confiscated those PJs. He still thought it was funny : ) Jess heard the commotion and asked if Hugh was playing with my electric shaver’s cover, apparently one of his favorite toys while in the bathroom. Sure enough, he scooted away from the toilet to the bottom draw of our sink and took out the clear plastic cover to my shaver, and the pen-like cover to the not-as-awesome-as-Billy-Mays- would-have-you-believe MiracleTouch. He’s having fun playing with silly pieces of plastic. Why, that is not even their intended purpose!
Maybe it is Hugh’s super power, to find the fun in something that could be no more boring than it is already! Maybe he’s just a boy. We have a family room filled with toys for Hugh. Well, typically the toys don’t take up that much space but after Hugh plays with one for a few seconds, it is off to the next. And there’s no need to pick one from a bin when dumping everything out just gives more options! Often at the end of a long day with Hugh at home, you could find him not playing with his toys, but playing with something quite mundane. Emptying each baby wipe from the diaper bag. Pulling CDs from their shelf. Getting plastic containers and lids from the kitchen, and then throwing them down the stairs.
Sometimes I think this is all mischievous and I wonder what the little rascal will get into next. Other times I want to be more like Hugh in my ability to enjoy the simple things or to just be adventurous with something. Granted, I’m older and wiser and know “a bunch more stuff”, but I hope that having fun like a baby isn’t completely past me because it looks like Hugh is having a great time! Should Jess ask you why my pajamas are in the toilet, just explain I’m being more adventurous – and that I wanted to know the simple joys of plumbing.
