Two nights ago my nephews were over for a sleep over and it's always good to be around family. Or, at least able to hear about family while in the comfort of my work cubicle. Adding three extra boys to the house, on top of Hugh (sometimes literally) is simply a shock. Not a bad thing, don't get me wrong, but when we barely think we have things under control with one kid, it is a large jump to four! Jess use to say she wanted to have twins or triplets to "just get it all done with at once," but I would like to hear from someone that had to adjust to any-number-lets coming home.
Jess was off to a prayer meeting for Youth Leaders so it was just us dudes that night. We had a good time playing the domino variant "Mexican Train" and they got the Wii ready for Super Mario Bros. while I gave Hugh a bath. We played a few levels but while colorful and fun, Mario isn't exactly a game for small kids. Or, at least small kids who don't play Mario too much ; ) I heard a lot of "It's not fair" because: "The wind pushed me", "So-and-so popped my bubble and I fell into the pit", "My turn was too short", "But I hit the jump button" - among others. If anything else, video games are not forgiving.
I know this because I finally finish every level of Mario just a few weeks ago and spent, literally, tens of (in-game, virtual) lives on certain levels. It was madness! And that dumb video game did not care whether I survived and conquered or died. That is what makes it a game, I guess, and probably why we like playing them. The excitement. The challenge. Why, back in my day, we blew the dust out of the console because sometimes it didn't work on the first try. We couldn't save our games because rewritable memory was probably too expensive to put into each cartridge - like a plastic box with some pins on one end and . . . oh, never mind. Our Mario Bros. didn't have wind, simultaneous multi-player or motion controls. And we liked it! Because sometimes, just like with family, it not always easy, but still a lot of fun in the end.

Awesome! Plus if you died you started the whole level over, not just the last 30 seconds... On a side note, i would like to know if you ever tried going back and playing the truly classic games we grew up with. I like the game play but i cant get past the "red square is your guy and the green one is mine" factor! Hope to see you guys soon!
